Meme Update and The Other Kind of Update Too

For those of you playing along in the Meme game (see post here), I am still working on responses. I haven't forgotten you, I'm just slow.

(If anyone wants to add another character to the pile, go for it. Shop hasn't closed up yet.)

I'm heading to Panera tonight for my free birthday pastry, and my free not-birthday coffee. I'm taking my lap-top and plan to work on the "What Happened When Tony Stark Got Sorted at Hogwarts" thing I'm writing, IDEK, blame [livejournal.com profile] cybermathwitch.

Have you noticed that I blame everything on her? I have no agency of my own, and she is responsible for all of the things. Ask me, I'll tell you.

Fic: Shakespeare (Othello) "Dearest Lady's Dearest Lord"

Title: Dearest Lady's Dearest Lord
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kadollan
Disclaimer: This work is a piece of fan-fiction that is intended for entertainment purposes only. It should be obvious to anyone paying attention that I am not Shakespeare.
Pairing: Othello/Jealousy, Iago/Rage, Emilia/Guilt, Desdemona/"I did not deserve that."
Rating: Teen 13+
Type: One Shot
Warnings: abuse of classical literature
Word Count: 429
Summary: Had this letter been delivered, the play might easily have turned into "Much Ado About Nothing," but instead we are left with a "strange truth" and a "monstrous act."
Notes: Written as an assignment for a Tragedies of Shakespeare class back in the dark ages of the 90's. It wasn't until years later that I realized that this is fanfiction.

He wanted a letter that if delivered and read, would have averted the tragedy.

You Know that's Neville Longbottom's Wand

Because it is purple and it says "Bad Ass Mother Fucker" on it. (He got this wand after his dad' was broken in the Department of Mysteries. True facts.)

So, I got this idea for a story back in 2007 (right after DH came out) that tells Neville's story using a series of letters, flashbacks and missing moments (Harry is just not that observant, bless him. And the canon stories are all told from his point of view. Did you know that after the fourth year Yule Ball, Neville and Ginny became really good friends? Yeah, neither did Harry.)

Anyway, I did this story for NaNoWriMo, I successfully wrote 50K worth of words, but I got nowhere near done telling Neville's story. (Please note that I did not say I wrote fifty thousand GOOD words.)

I'm working on editing what I did write, and then sorting out what's left before November and NaNoWriMo time rolls 'round again.

I may post snippets here as I go (as much to gauge some feedback as anything else...is this terrible? What am I even doing?)

My basic premise is that the prophecy really could have referred to either boy, and that Neville had as important a role to play in defeating Voldemort as Harry did. My working title is "Neville Longbottom: The Other Boy that Also Lived." (Because that's not depressing at all).

I'm Kind of Bad at Subject Lines

I've made a lot of new friends in the past day or three over at the lovely and incomparable [livejournal.com profile] be_compromised.

And then I suddenly realized that there are like two posts on here from this year, and one of them is super-maudlin and about my dead mum OH HI THAT MAKES A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION.

So, I says to myself, so. Let's begin as we mean to go on, tidy up a bit and introduce ourselves and maybe they won't notice. ::hides dust cloth covered in cobwebs behind back.::

I'm Kadollan, or Bekah, or Kade -- Kade is good. I just turned 39 last week, and I'm finally starting to get a hang of this whole "grown up" concept. I have a husband, three kids, and a dog, and Oh Lord...I live in the suburbs. From the outside (and as far as my boss or co-workers know) I appear to be about as normal a middle-American wife and mother as one could ever hope to meet.

Little do they know.

I was a tiny fangirl when I was a kid, although I didn't even know that was a thing. I read Elfquest as the glossy graphic novels were being published and I played made up games, wrote an "Elvendex" (a comprehensive glossary of all of the characters ever) and drew some truly horrific fan art. I was, like, ten, okay?

I spent my teenage years reading science fiction and fantasy (I have a lot of feelings about Robert Heinlein and Anne McCaffrey) and generally being a reclusive nerd.

These early experiences set me up beautifully for internet fandom. I met [livejournal.com profile] cybermathwitch while we were both in college. We were watching Buffy together and she introduced me to this whole "people that live in this tiny box will talk to you about this show, and they write stories too!" concept.

To which I responded: Whoa.

I never really got active in Buffy fandom (although I did read some pretty good fic. Including one truly outrageous and cracky affair based on the pre-supposition that Oz and Scott from Austin Powers were actually the same person. Good times.) But that was okay because hard and fast on the heels of Buffy was Harry Potter, and then it was all over for me. Good night. Go home.

I have always been a fairly passive member of fandom. I read A LOT, I write a little, and I bugger off for a while (but never stay gone for long).

I love Harry Potter, Firefly, Lord of the Rings (like to a nearly religious level...and I'm not actually exaggerating much), The Avengers (hello!), Star Trek (most, if not all incarnations), Narnia (although I have mixed feelings about the movies) and... hell. I just like stories, you know?

So, here's my philosophy about all this (is anyone still reading? Have I gone on too long?) I have lots of ships, and rarely will refuse to read something based on the pairing (with the notable and definite exception of cross-gen, incest or other such squicksome nonsense). What I am saying is, I'll read Darcy/Clint (especially if it's based in New Mexico) and still love me some Clint/Natasha. I can read Steve/Tony and Steve/Bucky and love both story lines. I kind of see each individual story as separate and independent. Make me believe it in your world, and I'm yours. I'm in it for the writing, the feels, and the community. This also means that I never rain on any one else's shipping or fandom parade. If you are reading and writing stories that make you happy then good on ya. Keep doing that.

So.

Nice you meet you!

Fic: Avengers (2012): It's Going to Be Okay

Title: It's Going to Be Okay
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kadollan
Disclaimer: This work is a piece of fan-fiction that is intended for entertainment purposes only. Clint Barton, Darcy Lewis, Pepper Potts and Jane Foster are owned by any number of people who are not me.
Pairing: Gen, Clint/Natasha implied, Tony/Pepper and Jane/Thor mentioned in passing
Rating: Teen 13+
Type: One Shot
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1034
Summary: It never occurred to Clint to wonder what it was like for Pepper, Jane, and Darcy to be left at home to wait for word during a mission. Until the day he's wounded and sitting in the kitchen, eating their cookies and worrying about his team.
Notes: A gift for my bestie, [livejournal.com profile] jessofthebugs, who was feeling stressed out and worried. She asked for something sweet, with the prompt "It's going to be okay."

As always, many thanks are due to my dear beta, [livejournal.com profile] cybermathwitch. Thank you darling! Any remaining mistakes are, of course, my own.

'It's going to be okay.' Pepper announced, as she prepared tea with precise, economical movements.

Gone Under the House

So, I just spent some time going through and sorting two more of Lu's boxes.   I don't like it (I cried), but that's two more done and that much closer to finished. (I also now get to check off my "One Thing" for the day, which I haven't been too good about here lately.)

I ran across a letter that my mom had started and, as far as I can tell never finished nor sent.  Contextually I can tell that she must have written in right about the time she and my dad were getting divorced (there's no date).

The following bit really caught my attention:

When I was a little girl an old dog got sick and "went under the house."  I remember my Mother telling me that dogs do that when they are sick -- and they stay until they get well or die.  I've always been a bit like that old dog; in times of extreme stress I withdraw.  This past year has been dreadful, but I think I'm not going to die.

So there you have it, genties and ladlemen.

It's hereditary.

What brings you here?

A friend of mine, [livejournal.com profile] ishbu_alv, asked her flist what had originally brought them to LJ.

For me the answer is two-part and simple.  [livejournal.com profile] cybermathwitch and fandom.   I started my LJ way back forever ago in December of 2002 (clickenzie here for a blast from my nerdy past).  She drug me along into fandom, starting with Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I think I might still technically be a member of the Yahoo Groups - remember Yahoo Groups? - "Willfics" community, though I long since stopped receiving the emails in my inbox.)

After Buffy came Harry Potter, my true Fandom love.  Other fandoms may come or go, but Harry is mine forever.  (In a completely not creepy way, of course.)

I've always been an irregular poster, in any blog or journal I've ever kept, and it is no different here.   After more of my friends joined LJ, I started using it for other-than-fandom purposes, but really this was all about the fanfiction, the squee, the links to fan-news, the embedded fan videos and trailers... it was about having a community of people who love the same things I love, with the same intense and wacky passion.

Now, every so often (usually every summer, actually since that's when the movies come out) I see something that reawakens that fandom love and I come back here to see what's become of the place.   Star Trek, Narnia, and now, of course, Avengers.

So... what brought you to LJ?

Like a Boss

I've recently started uploading my fanfiction over to A03.

Like a boss, I added all the Draco/Ginny LDWS drabbles from last 2009, and I finally got the last three posted to [livejournal.com profile] awfully_clever

Like a boss.

Guess who has gotten a comment on one story (okay, not a very good comment, but hey, it was a comment, alright?) AND some Kudos?

THIS GIRL.

In other news,I didn't make the [livejournal.com profile] hd_holidays cut. Alas and woe -- and good luck to the authors who did get in! (Truth be told, I'm almost relieved, since I'm doing the two Next Gen fests.)

So, yes. There you have it.

Dear Citizens of Dreamwidth,

If I've just added you, and you've come 'round to see if I'm real or a sock puppet, let me assure you that I do exist! I've not used this Journal to post (I have a home on el-jay that I already don't use much...) -- so there's no actual content here. Yet.

But I am real!

Honest!

::HUMS:: It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

No, I'm not talking about shark week or the kids going back to school (although those are both pretty good too).

It's Fest Time!

Guess who got the bug to start writing again just as a new crop of Fests got started? This girl!

I'm doing [livejournal.com profile] the_ass_fest and [livejournal.com profile] smrw_ficafest (banners below.)

I'm excited!

What if?

GUYS

What if I wrote an Al/Scorpius fic that is riffing off of 10 Things I Hate About You (which in turn riffed off of Taming of the Shrew.  It would be a riff-a-palooza).

Lily is the younger sister who can't date until Al does...    James can be the one who made the rule (with some kind of magically binding thing, so Lily and Al don't just ignore him).

It would be EPIC.
