Because it is purple and it says "Bad Ass Mother Fucker" on it. (He got this wand after his dad' was broken in the Department of Mysteries. True facts.)

So, I got this idea for a story back in 2007 (right after DH came out) that tells Neville's story using a series of letters, flashbacks and missing moments (Harry is just not that observant, bless him. And the canon stories are all told from his point of view. Did you know that after the fourth year Yule Ball, Neville and Ginny became really good friends? Yeah, neither did Harry.)

Anyway, I did this story for NaNoWriMo, I successfully wrote 50K worth of words, but I got nowhere near done telling Neville's story. (Please note that I did not say I wrote fifty thousand GOOD words.)

I'm working on editing what I did write, and then sorting out what's left before November and NaNoWriMo time rolls 'round again.

I may post snippets here as I go (as much to gauge some feedback as anything else...is this terrible? What am I even doing?)

My basic premise is that the prophecy really could have referred to either boy, and that Neville had as important a role to play in defeating Voldemort as Harry did. My working title is "Neville Longbottom: The Other Boy that Also Lived." (Because that's not depressing at all).

So, I'm finally editing my Nanowrimo novel (tentatively titled "Neville Longbottom:  The Other Boy Who Also Lived"  Being the tale of how Neville wasn't a hero, and didn't get the girl.)   I'm telling Neville's story -- what the prophecy meant for the other boy.   I'm doing my best to tell a completely canon compliant story.   My theory is that the books are told from Harry's perspective, and Harry is a self-absorbed twat (not that one can totally blame him, between being a teenaged boy and having a Dark Lord in his head.)  But anyway, I figure that "anything that Harry didn't directly witness, and that canon does not contradict" leaves me a lot of room to play.   For instance, did you know that Ginny and Neville became very close friends after he took her to the Yule Ball?  Yeah, well neither did Harry.

About half of the novel is written in letters.  Letters written by Neville, talking to his Gran about school, letters written between Neville, Ginny and Luna during summers.  And later, letters written during the war, that were never sent.

These are two of the latter.   Ginny is back at The Burrow, after Easter of 1997.  Neville is at Hogwarts, hiding in the Room of Requirement and Luna has been rescued from Malfoy Manor and is staying at Shell Cottage.
